Have you ever heard the phrase “Fat Tuesday?” Do you know what it refers to? Fat Tuesday is actually the English translation for the holiday of Mardi Gras. In this educational kids video, we are going to learn more about Mardi Gras together!
The origins of Mardi Gras go back thousands of years. In ancient Rome, it started as a pagan celebration of spring and fertility. Later, when Christianity spread, the Catholic Church adopted the festival into its calendar, connecting it to the season of Lent. In Christian tradition, Lent is a time for fasting and reflection leading up to the Easter holiday. This means that the date of Mardi Gras changes yearly and falls during the months of February or early March—depending on when Easter is that year.
In the 1700s, the French brought Mardi Gras to the United States, and it became an important tradition in areas like Louisiana. In the past, Fat Tuesday celebrations involved parades with horse-drawn floats. Participants in the festival would mask their faces to disguise themselves. Balls, parties, and feasts were also common.
