Have you ever played the pool game “Marco Polo” and wondered where the name came from? Though there is not a direct historical link between the two, the game is named after the famous 13th-century explorer, Marco Polo. Which makes sense, when you think about it! In this educational video for kids, we are going to learn more about Marco Polo.
Marco Polo was born in Venice, Italy in 1254. At the time, Venice was one of the most successful trading cities in the world. It served as a gateway to Asia, where there were many goods and riches to be found and traded. Marco’s mother died when he was very young, and his father, Niccolo, was a merchant who traveled frequently. So Marco Polo was raised by his aunt and uncle while learning the family business. Reading, writing, and arithmetic were necessary skills, and Marco could also speak four languages!
His father and uncle journeyed along the Silk Road to reach present-day China. The Silk Road included several trade routes that stretched from Eastern Europe to Northern China. The name of the road came from silk cloth, which was a major Chinese export at the time.
