Do you know the name of a famous civil rights leader who refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus? That’s right! It is Rosa Parks. While she might not have been the first Black woman to decline to move to the back of the bus, her bold refusal to follow an unfair law still resonates. Today, in this educational video for kids, we are going to learn more her!
Born on February 4, 1913, Rosa Louise McCauley spent her early years in Tuskegee, Alabama. Later, she moved with her mother to her grandparents’ farm near Montgomery, Alabama. At 16, Rosa had to leave school because her mother and grandmother became ill. Rosa then married Raymond Parks at age 19. He was a barber by trade, and encouraged his wife to return to school. After she graduated, she started a career as a seamstress.
When Rosa and Raymond got married, Raymond was already active in the Civil Rights Movement. Together, they began volunteering for several organizations fighting to end racial injustices. Rosa was elected as secretary of one such organization, the NAACP in 1943. By 1955, she was well-established in the Civil Rights Movement, and also renowned for her ability to organize peaceful protests.
