Did you know that Ruby Bridges faced extreme racism and hatred all because she wanted to go a certain school? It is unfortunately true. Learn more about Ruby Bridges and her bravery amid difficult circumstances in this educational kids video.
Ruby Bridges was born on September 8, 1954, a few short months after a landmark Supreme Court case called Brown versus Board of Education. This decision overturned, or replaced, an old rule from 1896 that said it was okay to have separate schools for separate races, as long as they were “equal.” This is called segregation.
In reality, the schools that Black and other minority children attended were not equal to the schools that white children attended. Segregation was used to make sure that white students received a higher quality education than their Black peers. So the Supreme Court ruled that segregation was not legal, and that all schools should be integrated, or allow all children, no matter what race, to attend. Unfortunately, many areas of the United States continued to practice segregation, even though it was against the law. This was the case in New Orleans, where Ruby grew up.
