Do you know who Sally Ride is? She was the very first American female astronaut to travel to space! Growing up, she was very smart and was also a gifted tennis player. But she chose instead to pursue an education in physics. While working on her doctorate degree, NASA chose her to be one of six women astronaut candidates!

Training was hard work, especially since she was still working on her doctorate! On June 18, 1983, Sally rode in the space shuttle Challenger as the flight engineer. She took another flight on Challenger the next year, conducting experiments for 8 days. The shuttle exploded on a later flight, but Dr. Ride was not on it. She did, however, help investigate the cause of the explosion.

Sally Ride left NASA in 1987 and worked as a physics professor at the University of California, San Diego and as director of the California Space Institute. She wrote lots of children's books about outer space! Sadly, she passed away on July 23, 2012, after battling cancer. President Obama posthumously awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
