Have you ever visited a place and seen dry, cracked earth before? Maybe where there used to be a lake or other body of water? This can be a result of a natural disaster called a drought. Today, in this educational video for kids, we are going to learn more about droughts!

You might have already learned that around 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. But that does not mean that the water is spread across the land in the same way. Some places have lots of fresh water in the form of rivers, lakes, ponds, and streams, which get refilled by rainfall, runoffs, and underground water sources. Other places are drier and more desert-like with less access to water sources.

Droughts happen when there is a lack of water for a long period of time in a place where a lack of water is not normal. For example, in an area where rain is needed for farming, a month of dry weather without rainfall could be considered a drought. But, in an area with more of a water supply, a month without rain might not be as big of a deal.
