Have you ever wondered why we can live comfortably and breathe on our planet? The answer is the atmosphere! The term comes from two Greek words; atmos, which means gas, and sphere, which means globe. In this educational video for kids, we are going to learn all about the different layers of the atmosphere and then create some flashcards together!
Let’s start with the lowest layer of the atmosphere, the troposphere. This layer is where we live and breathe, and it rises about six to 12 miles above the Earth. Want to know something interesting about this atmospheric layer? It is where all weather, like rain, snow, storms, and even clouds, happens! This is one of the defining characteristics of the troposphere. And the higher you go, the colder it gets. It can be as cold as -60 degrees Fahrenheit at the very top of the troposphere.
The stratosphere is the next layer of the atmosphere. It extends up to about 30 miles above Earth. One of the regions inside of the stratosphere is the ozone layer, which protects us from some of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Airplanes will sometimes fly in the lower stratosphere to avoid bad weather, since there are no storms up there.
