Did you know that you probably use magnets every day in one way or another? Magnets are everywhere, in doorbells and computers, in There are three kinds: temporary, permanent, and electromagnets. Temporary magnets become magnetized when a magnetic field is present. But they lose that magnetism once the magnetic field is gone.
Permanent magnets are made from materials that are naturally or chemically magnetized, like iron or nickel. These are the magnets you would use on your fridge. Electromagnets are created by running an current through a coil with a metal core. The energized core creates magnetic field, and when the current turns off, the magnetic field disappears. An MRI machine is a great example of an electromagnet.
The earth itself is a magnet! It has a magnetic field that is generated by the earth's core. This is because of the molten iron and nickel that exists in the earth's outer core. The movement of the metals acts like an electric generator. Cool, huh?
