What do you know about magnets and electricity? This video describes some helpful facts about magnetism and electromagnets that you might not know. All magnets have two poles called the north pole and the south pole. If we place two magnets together and the poles are opposite (north and south), they will attract one another. On the other hand, two magnets together that have the same poles will repel each other.

The area around a magnet is called a magnetic field, and Earth has its own magnetic field. That means our planet is like a giant magnet. When we use a compass, the needle inside is a magnet with two poles. The north pole of the needle attracts to the north pole on Earth (as in the magnetic north pole, not the North Pole location). This is why the compass needle always points north.

Electromagnets are the only magnets that require electricity to work. Once the source of electricity of an electromagnet is turned off or disconnected, the electromagnet will no longer work. Keep watching the video for some fun STEM activities that you could try at home. Make sure you have adults around to help you.
