Number 10: New York was once New Amsterdam.
When colonizers came to North America, certain countries gravitated to certain places. Back in the 1600s, the Dutch were the first Europeans to settle in the area that would become New York state. They called it New Amsterdam. However, in 1664, the British came along and took control of the colony. They changed the name to New York to honor the Duke of York, and the rest is history!
