Have you ever been outside at nighttime and studied the moon? Today, in this educational video for kids, we are going to talk about the phases of the moon, and share a mnemonic device to help you remember them!

Let’s start off with a quick overview of the Earth’s moon. It is Earth’s only natural satellite, and one of the brightest objects in our sky because of its relative closeness to our planet. The moon is about a quarter of the size of Earth and is slightly flattened at its poles.

While the moon appears to change shape in the sky, it never really changes. That is where the moon’s phases come in. These phases are caused by the changing positions of the moon, the Earth, and the sun. The sun is the only object that shines with its own light in our entire solar system. That light reflects off of the moon, and the phases, or shapes, we see in the sky are dependent on the position of the moon’s orbit around the Earth.
