Some animals have incredible abilities called adaptations that help them survive in the wild. Today, in this video for kids, we are going to talk about five unique animals and their adaptations.
First up is the thorny devil lizard, a cool-looking reptile covered in sharp, thorny spikes. It also has grooves on is skin that channel rainwater directly to its mouth, which comes in handy given where it lives! This solitary creature lives in the hot deserts of Australia and is about the size of a ruler. The thorny devil lizard’s unique adaptation is called a pseudo head, which is on the back of its neck. This false head makes the lizard look more intimidating to predators.
Next up is the elusive electric eel. This fascinating fish lives in the murky spots of rivers in South America, like the Amazon River. Here is an interesting fact: Even though it is called an eel, it is actually a type of knifefish. Electric eels are long and slim, and they can grow up to eight feet long! Their unique adaptation is the ability to generate shocks. Electric eels do this by using specialized cells called electrocytes. These cells stack up in the organs along the eel’s body and creates a powerful electric current when they work together. Said current can be as strong as 600 volts, which is enough to kill other fish and deter predators.
Talk about electric!
