The Great Wall of China | Learn about this incredible wonder of the world

The Great Wall of China is an incredible engineering marvel that took nearly 2,000 years to complete and is one of the new seven wonders of the world. Our journey begins in the 3rd century BCE with Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who wanted to protect his kingdom from northern invaders and secure important trade routes. Before the Great Wall was built, there were several smaller walls with many gaps. To unify these defenses, Emperor Huang tasked General Meng Tian with creating a continuous wall approximately 10,000 li long, which is about 3,000 miles!

Building the Great Wall was not easy. Workers faced challenging hilly terrains, and a huge labor force was needed. This force included soldiers, convicts, and commoners, and unfortunately, many workers lost their lives during construction. Although the wall began in Emperor Huang's time, it wasn't completed until the Ming Dynasty, which lasted from 1368 to 1644 CE.

The Great Wall is impressive in size—the top is about 13 to 16 feet wide, enough for five horses or ten soldiers to walk side by side, and its average height is around 25.6 feet! The longest man-made structure in the world, it stretches nearly 13,000 miles, which is half the distance around Earth’s equator. The wall features barracks, towers, and fortresses, and one unique ingredient used in its mortar was sticky rice flour! If you could walk the entire length of the Great Wall, it would take over 17 months walking 12 miles a day.

The Great Wall stands as a testament to human ingenuity and determination, explaining why it remains a celebrated wonder of the world. What surprising fact did you learn about this magnificent structure today?

Let’s take a trip back to China in the third century BCE, to the kingdom of an innovative emperor, Qin Shi Huang.

Emperor Huang saw a need to protect his people from northern invaders, as well as to protect important trades routes.
