Mansa Musa became king around 1307 CE and is famous for his pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, which showcased his immense wealth. His caravan included 60,000 men, all dressed in luxurious silk, and camels that carried hundreds of pounds of gold.

During his journey, Mansa Musa's generosity was so great that he inadvertently caused the value of gold to drop in places he visited, like Cairo. Upon arriving in Mecca, he was celebrated and recognized for his royal status, entering with a grand display of gold and wealth. Mansa Musa didn't just focus on riches; he expanded the Mali Empire by adding important cities like Gao and Timbuktu and worked to make Timbuktu a center for Islamic learning and trade.

He built impressive mosques and introduced new construction techniques that advanced building practices of the time. Mansa Musa passed away around 1332, leaving behind a legacy of wealth, education, and innovation. His reign marked the height of the Mali Empire, but after his death, the kingdom eventually fell to the Songhai Empire.
