Working on and riding Big Boy 4014, world’s largest operating steam train. In this video we supervise the lubrication, fueling, and water filling of Big Boy 4014; then ride on it during a segment of it’s coast-to-coast tour. Big Boy is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive! After being completely inspired, we play along at home with an HO model train set to replicate railroad operations.
Big Boy is about to embark on a leg of it’s coast-to-coast tour but needs to be lubricated before departure. After the train is immobilized, Kid Crew joins Union Pacific crew members to oil the locomotive. Then he heads up into the cab with Ed Dickens, the trains engineer to turn on the headlight and check the locomotives brakes. After everything checks out perfect, we head back to a lounge car on the train for a ride as Ed takes his seat at the controls. After one more safety check, we start our journey. While enjoying the scenary, we complete a thorough inspection of our train car, have a snack, and log our position. The locomotive comes to a stop and we disembark to supervise the refueling of fuel and water in Big Boy’s tenders. Although coal-fired steam locomotives and their related infrastructure was common in the past, Big Boy now has to adapt to current conditions, First we watch fueling, Big Boy is powered by oil instead of coal because it burns cleaner and is easier to source locally. Then we watch it’s three water tenders be filled with water. After these tasks, we complete a critical post-operating inspection with Ed to hammer test to the running gear to ensure nothing got loose on our journey. As a special treat, we then get an HO scale toy boxcar signed and use it on our HO railroad layout at home. A farmer takes is harvest to a local grain elevator in a semi truck and it is subsequently loaded into a train car. Kid Crew fires up an HO DCC model steam train and completes switching operations to couple the grain car and bring it to a station where it is traded for boxcars filled with finished goods. A diesel switching engine is used for that operation before the steam train gets on it’s way. In the educational segment we learn how steam locomotive works to harness the power of boiling water to power the train.
