The Middle Ages was a fascinating period in history that lasted over 1,000 years, starting from the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD and ending with the discovery of America in 1492 AD. During this time, Europe was divided into various territories ruled by kings and nobles through a system known as feudalism. At the top of the social pyramid was the king, followed by nobles, clergy, and peasants, who worked the land in exchange for protection.

The Middle Ages can be split into two main phases: the early Middle Ages, where nobles and clergy held significant power, and the late Middle Ages, when monarchs regained control. This period saw a shift from subsistence farming to increased production and commercial activity, leading to the rise of cities as economic centers. Knights played a crucial role in warfare, defending their lords and participating in tournaments, while castles served as fortified homes for the nobility.

Art during the Middle Ages was heavily influenced by the church, leading to the emergence of Romanesque art between the 11th and 13th centuries. This style was characterized by sturdy architecture, thick walls, and vibrant frescoes that taught religious stories to the largely illiterate population. The churches built during this time were not only places of worship but also community centers for pilgrims traveling to sacred sites.

As time progressed into the Gothic period, art and architecture underwent a remarkable transformation. Gothic cathedrals featured pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses, allowing for larger structures filled with stunning stained glass windows that bathed the interiors in colorful light. These cathedrals became the heart of bustling cities, where people gathered for trade and festivities. Creatures like gargoyles adorned the rooftops, serving both decorative and functional purposes.
