What do you know about life cycles? In Metamorphosis for Kids, you'll learn about the life cycle of most insects and amphibians. All living organisms go through a life cycle. Different living things have different life cycles. Some living things look exactly like the parent, other living things (like humans) look like the parent with different traits, and others look much different than the parent.
There are two types of metamorphosis—complete and incomplete. Complete metamorphosis consists of four stages, and incomplete metamorphosis consists of just three stages. Incomplete metamorphosis is sometimes called gradual or simple. The word metamorphosis comes from the Greek words meta, which means “change”, and morphe, meaning “form." To sum it up, the word means “change of form.”
About 90% of all insects undergo complete metamorphosis, which involves 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Some, like grasshoppers, undergo incomplete metamorphosis, which involves three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Amphibians like frogs, toads, and newts also experience a 3-stage incomplete metamorphosis: egg, larva, adult.
