The Old Melbourne Jail is a time machine that takes us back to the gold rush of the1800’s when Victoria became famous due to the discovery of gold in the Victorian Goldfields.

The jail was known as a prison for men, but surprisingly it was also a prison for women.

Today the Old Melbourne Gaol is a museum where you can learn all about the history of Melbourne and what life was like in the 1800s.

It's like stepping into a time machine and going on an adventure through history where you can learn about the different stories you might uncover in this spooky, old jail!

The jail is a big, cold, stone building with thick walls and heavy iron doors. It wasn’t designed to be a fun place but a place for people who didn’t follow the rules and broke the law.

It was a place where criminals and bad guys were sent for timeout to think about the crimes they committed and make sure they didn't do it again.While they are there, they have to do things like stay in their rooms and follow rules, like when to eat and when to sleep.

This jail had some famous guests but the most famous was bushranger Ned Kelly, an outlaw who lived in the bush and was like a real-life Robin Hood. He wore a big, metal suit and helmet that made him look like a robot from the future! He robbed banks but eventually, got caught and ended up in the this jail.

Some people thought he was a hero, while others thought he was a bit of a troublemaker.
